A religion and philosophy that started in India about 2,500 years ago, based on the teachings of the Buddha.
What is it?
Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, in ancient India. It teaches that life involves suffering, but by following the Eightfold Path, people can achieve enlightenment and freedom from suffering. Buddhism spread to many parts of Asia, including China. In China, it mixed with local traditions and produced unique art, like the seated Guanyin statue. Buddhism has many schools, such as Zen and Pure Land.

Buddhism has influenced the culture, art, and philosophy of many countries. Understanding Buddhism helps you understand many artworks and traditions.
