Sui Dynasty
A short but important Chinese dynasty that reunited China after centuries of division.
What is it?
The Sui Dynasty ruled China from 581 to 618 CE. It was founded by Emperor Wen. The Sui reunified China after the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. They built the Grand Canal and rebuilt the Great Wall. Buddhism flourished during this time, and many Buddhist statues were made.
Why it matters
The Sui Dynasty set the stage for the golden age of the Tang Dynasty. Its art and architecture influenced later Chinese culture.
