Maitreya Bodhisattva
In Buddhism, the bodhisattva who will become the next Buddha in the future, bringing peace to the world.
What is it?
Maitreya is a bodhisattva who is expected to appear on Earth in the future. He will become a Buddha and teach people how to live in harmony. He is often called the "Future Buddha." In art, Maitreya is shown sitting calmly, sometimes with a small stupa (a Buddhist monument) in his crown. The gilt bronze statue you saw is a beautiful example of how Maitreya was depicted in ancient China. According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya will succeed Shakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha) and will come to save all beings when the world reaches a state of bliss.
