Maitreya
In Buddhism, the future Buddha who will appear on Earth to teach and save people.
What is it?
Maitreya is a bodhisattva and the future Buddha. Buddhists believe he is currently in a heaven called Tushita, waiting for the right time to be reborn on Earth. He will become the next Buddha after Gautama Buddha. Maitreya is often shown sitting with his feet on the ground, ready to stand up and help. He represents hope and compassion. The gilt bronze statue you saw is a beautiful example of how Maitreya was depicted in ancient China. According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya will succeed Shakyamuni Buddha and will come to save all beings when the world reaches a state of bliss.
