Buddhist Art
Art that is inspired by the teachings of Buddhism, including statues, paintings, and buildings.
What is it?
Buddhist art includes images of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and scenes from Buddhist stories. It started in India and spread to China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. In China, Buddhist art blended with local styles. During the Song Dynasty, statues became more natural and graceful. The seated Guanyin is a beautiful example of Song Buddhist sculpture. Buddhist art often uses symbols like the lotus flower (purity) and the mudra (hand gesture).
Why it matters
Buddhist art helps people learn about Buddhism and feel peaceful. It also shows how art changes as it moves to new places. Many of the world's most beautiful artworks are Buddhist.
