A civilization that began along the Nile River in Africa over 5,000 years ago, famous for pyramids, pharaohs, and mummies.

What is it?

Ancient Egypt was one of the world's first great civilizations. It lasted from around 3100 BCE to 332 BCE. The Egyptians built huge pyramids, created hieroglyphic writing, and made beautiful art. They believed in many gods and an afterlife. The mummy and coffin of Henut-wedjebu is an example of their burial practices. Another example is the funerary stela of Thutmose and shabti figurines, which show their beliefs about death and the afterlife. The stela depicts Thutmose with gods, and the shabti were meant to serve him in the afterlife.

Why it matters

Ancient Egypt has left us amazing monuments and artworks. Understanding it helps us see how people lived and what they believed thousands of years ago.
