Valley of the Kings
A valley in Egypt where pharaohs and nobles were buried during the New Kingdom.
What is it?
The Valley of the Kings is located on the west bank of the Nile near Thebes (modern Luxor). It was used as a burial place for pharaohs and powerful nobles from about 1550 to 1070 BCE. The tombs are cut into the rock and decorated with paintings. The coffin of Henut-wedjebu was found here. The funerary stela of Thutmose and shabti figurines likely also came from this area. The valley contains over 60 tombs, including that of Tutankhamun.
Why it matters
The Valley of the Kings contains some of the most famous tombs in the world, including Tutankhamun's. It gives us a lot of information about Egyptian burial practices.
