What is it?
A pharaoh was the ruler of ancient Egypt. The word means "great house." Pharaohs were considered living gods and had absolute power. They built huge monuments like pyramids and temples. Famous pharaohs include Ramesses II and Tutankhamun. The pharaoh was also the high priest and led religious ceremonies.
Why it matters
Pharaohs were the most powerful people in ancient Egypt. Their tombs and monuments give us a lot of information about Egyptian life and beliefs. Many museum exhibits are about pharaohs.
