What is it?
The Byzantine Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the east. It began when Emperor Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople (modern Istanbul) in 330. The empire spoke Greek and followed Christianity. It preserved many Roman laws and Greek learning. It lasted until 1453, when the Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople.
Why it matters
The Byzantine Empire kept alive the knowledge of ancient Greece and Rome for over a thousand years. Its art, architecture, and laws influenced Europe and the Middle East. Many museums have Byzantine artifacts like mosaics, icons, and coins.
