Justinian I
A Byzantine emperor who ruled from 527 to 565 and is known for his law code and building projects.
What is it?
Justinian I (about 482–565) was a Byzantine emperor. He is famous for creating the Justinian Code, a collection of Roman laws that later influenced many European legal systems. He also built the Hagia Sophia, a huge church in Constantinople. During his reign, the Byzantine Empire reached its greatest size. Gold coins from his time show his image and sometimes Jesus Christ.
Why it matters
Justinian was one of the most important Byzantine emperors. His law code and buildings had a lasting impact. Many museums have coins and artifacts from his reign.
