Islam is a religion that started in the 7th century in Arabia. Muslims believe in one God, Allah, and that Muhammad is his prophet. The Quran is their holy book. Islam spread quickly across the Middle East, North Africa, and into Europe. The rise of Islam challenged the Byzantine Empire, and after centuries of conflict, the Ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453.
