Byzantine Art
Art from the Byzantine Empire, known for its religious icons, mosaics, and use of gold.
What is it?
Byzantine art was made in the Byzantine Empire from about 330 to 1453. It focused on Christian subjects, like Jesus, Mary, and saints. Artists used bright colors, gold backgrounds, and flat, formal styles. Mosaics made of tiny colored stones or glass were common. Icons (religious paintings) were used in churches and homes. The gold coins from the exhibit are also examples of Byzantine art.
Why it matters
Byzantine art influenced the art of Eastern Europe and Russia. It also preserved ancient Roman and Greek artistic traditions. Many museums have beautiful Byzantine mosaics and icons.
