Coin Striking
A method of making coins by hammering a metal blank between two engraved dies.
What is it?
Coin striking is a technique used to produce coins. A blank piece of metal (usually gold, silver, or copper) is placed between two dies that have the design carved into them. A hammer strikes the top die, pressing the design into both sides of the coin. The Byzantine gold coins you saw were made this way.
Why it matters
Coins are important historical sources. They show us what rulers looked like, what symbols they used, and what they wanted people to remember. Coin striking allowed mass production of coins, which helped trade and economy.
