What is it?
The Roman Empire was a huge empire that started in 27 BCE when Augustus became the first emperor. It included many lands around the Mediterranean, from Britain to Egypt. The Romans built roads, aqueducts, and cities. They also made many sculptures and portraits of their emperors. The empire fell in 476 CE in the west, but continued in the east as the Byzantine Empire.
Why it matters
The Roman Empire shaped Western culture, law, and art. Many later artists, like those in the Renaissance, looked back to Roman art for inspiration.
