What is it?
Byzantine art was created in the Byzantine Empire from about 330 to 1453. It often shows religious figures like Jesus, Mary, and saints. Artists used gold backgrounds, bright colors, and flat, stylized figures. Mosaics made of small colored stones or glass were common in churches. The coin in your exhibit is an example of Byzantine art, with Jesus and Emperor Justinian.
Why it matters
Byzantine art influenced the art of Eastern Europe and Russia. Its style can still be seen in Orthodox churches today.
