Tropical Rainforest

A hot, wet forest near the equator with many tall trees and lots of rain all year.

What is it?

A tropical rainforest is a forest that gets a lot of rain (more than 80 inches per year) and stays warm all year. They are found near the equator in places like Southeast Asia, the Amazon, and Central Africa. Tropical rainforests have many layers: the emergent layer, canopy, understory, and forest floor. They are home to more than half of the world's plant and animal species, including the Rhinoceros Hornbill and the Magnificent Ground Pigeon. The Magnificent Ground Pigeon lives on the forest floor of tropical rainforests in Papua New Guinea. The Rhinoceros Hornbill lives in the canopy and emergent layers of Southeast Asian rainforests. The Grey-winged Trumpeter lives in the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin, where it forages on the forest floor for fruits and insects. The Victoria Crowned Pigeon lives in the lowland rainforests of New Guinea, where it feeds on fallen fruits and seeds.
