Iridescence
A shiny, rainbow-like color that changes when you look at it from different angles.
What is it?
Iridescence is when a surface appears to change color depending on the angle you look at it. Peacock feathers have iridescent colors—they can look green, blue, or gold. This happens because the feather has tiny structures that bend light, like a prism. Other iridescent things include soap bubbles, butterfly wings, and some seashells. The Congo Peafowl also has some iridescence in its dark blue and green feathers.
Why it matters
Iridescence helps animals attract mates or warn predators. It also inspires artists and scientists to create new materials and designs.
