Casque
A hollow structure on the top of some birds' beaks, like the horn on a hornbill.
What is it?
A casque is a hollow, horn-like structure on the top of the beak of some birds, especially hornbills and cassowaries. It is made of keratin, the same material as our fingernails. In the Rhinoceros Hornbill, the casque is bright yellow and orange. Scientists think it helps amplify the bird's calls, making them louder so they can be heard through the dense rainforest. The casque may also be used for display to attract mates or establish dominance.
Why it matters
The casque is an example of a unique adaptation. It shows how animals evolve special features to survive in their environment. Studying casques helps scientists understand how birds communicate and how evolution works.
