What is it?
Karnak is a vast temple complex in ancient Thebes, the capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom. It was built and expanded by many pharaohs from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic period. The main temple is dedicated to Amun-Ra, the king of the gods. Karnak was a religious and political center. The sphinx of Sesostris III you saw likely stood here, guarding the temple.
Why it matters
Karnak is one of the largest religious sites in the world. It shows the power and wealth of ancient Egypt. Many statues and sphinxes were placed there to honor the gods and pharaohs.
