What is it?
The Song Dynasty is divided into Northern Song (960-1127) and Southern Song (1127-1279). It was a period of great achievements in painting, ceramics, sculpture, and inventions like printing and gunpowder. The capital was Kaifeng (Northern) and later Hangzhou (Southern). The seated Guanyin statue you captured was made during the Northern Song. Song Buddhist sculpture is known for its naturalism and grace, with figures that appear more human and less stiff than earlier periods. The Song Dynasty also saw the rise of Neo-Confucianism and a strong economy.
