Oil Paint
A type of paint made by mixing colored powder with oil, often used for detailed paintings.
What is it?
Oil paint is made from pigment (colored powder) and a drying oil, like linseed oil. It dries slowly, allowing artists to blend colors smoothly. It became popular during the Renaissance. The Mona Lisa was painted with oil paint on a wood panel. The slow drying time allowed Leonardo to create the soft transitions of sfumato.
Why it matters
Oil paint allows artists to create rich, detailed, and long-lasting paintings. Many famous artworks are oil paintings.
