What is it?
Emotion and expression are themes in art where the artist tries to show their inner feelings. Instead of painting a realistic scene, they use colors, lines, and shapes to make you feel something. Abstract Expressionist paintings are a great example. The artist might use bright colors for joy or dark colors for sadness. The way they paint—fast or slow, smooth or rough—also shows emotion.
Why it matters
Art about emotion helps us understand how people feel. It also lets us express our own feelings when we look at it.
