Portraiture is a genre of art where the main subject is a person. Portraits can show how someone looks, but also their personality or mood. The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous portraits in the world. It is a half-length portrait, showing the sitter from the chest up, with a landscape background.
Why it matters
Portraits help us remember people and understand history. They show us what people valued and how they wanted to be seen.
