Impressionism
An art style from the late 1800s where artists painted quick, colorful scenes of everyday life.
What is it?
Impressionism started in France in the 1870s. Artists like Monet, Renoir, and Degas wanted to capture a moment in time. They painted outdoors and used bright colors. They didn't blend their brushstrokes, so you can see each mark. They painted ordinary scenes like parks, harbors, and people having fun. The child's reflection describes Monet's painting "Sailing Boats Leaving the Harbour, Le Havre" as an Impressionist work, noting the quick brushstrokes and focus on light. Another painting described by the child is "Winter City Street", also by Monet, which shows a winter street scene with similar techniques.
Why it matters
Impressionism was a big change from traditional painting. It showed that art could be about everyday life and feelings, not just history or religion.
