What is it?
Modern art is a broad term for art created roughly between the 1860s and 1970s. Artists during this time experimented with new ways of seeing and making art. They moved away from realistic painting and tried to express emotions, ideas, or the modern world. Movements like Impressionism, Cubism, and Abstract Art are all part of modern art. Piet Mondrian's abstract paintings are a key example of modern art.
Why it matters
Modern art changed everything. It opened the door for artists to be more creative and personal. Many of the artworks you see in museums today are modern art.
