Post-Impressionism
A period in art from the late 1880s to early 1900s when artists moved beyond Impressionism to express emotion and structure.
What is it?
The Post-Impressionism period lasted from about 1885 to 1910. Artists like Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Georges Seurat developed new styles. They used bold colors, thick paint, and strong shapes. Van Gogh's "Wheat Field with Cypresses" (1889) is a key work from this period. Post-Impressionism led to many modern art movements like Fauvism and Cubism.
Why it matters
This period changed art forever. It showed that art could be about the artist's feelings and ideas, not just realistic pictures.
