This technique adds a three-dimensional feel to the painting. Artists like Vincent van Gogh used impasto to make their paintings more expressive and to show movement and emotion. In his painting "Wheat Field with Cypresses," the thick swirls in the sky and the rough texture of the wheat field are examples of impasto.
