Cubism
An art style from the early 1900s where artists broke objects into geometric shapes and showed them from many angles at once.
What is it?
Cubism was invented by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque around 1907. In Cubist paintings, objects like people, bottles, or guitars are taken apart and put back together with shapes. You might see the front and side of a face at the same time. The colors are often muted, like browns, grays, and blues. Picasso's "Seated Woman" is a Cubist painting.
Why it matters
Cubism changed art forever. It showed that paintings don't have to look like real life. It opened the door for many other modern art styles.
