What is it?
The mid-20th century was a period of great change in art. After World War II, New York became the new center of the art world. Abstract Expressionism emerged in the 1940s and 1950s. Artists experimented with new ways of painting, like dripping and pouring paint. This period also saw the rise of Pop Art and Minimalism later on. Picasso's "Seated Woman" (1953) was created during this time, showing that Cubism continued to influence artists.

Many of the most famous modern artworks were created during this time. Understanding this period helps you understand the art of today.
