What is it?
The Dutch Golden Age was a period from about 1588 to 1702 when the Dutch Republic was a world power in trade, science, and art. Many artists painted still lifes, landscapes, and portraits for wealthy merchants. The still life you saw was made during this time.
Why it matters
This period produced some of the most famous artists in history, like Rembrandt and Vermeer. Dutch art from this time is known for its realism and detail.
