What is it?
Dutch Baroque is the style of art that flourished in the Netherlands during the 17th century. Unlike Baroque art in other countries, which was often religious and grand, Dutch Baroque focused on everyday life. Artists painted portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and scenes of people at home or at work. They used strong contrasts of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) to make their paintings look real and dramatic. Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" is a perfect example: the dark background and bright face show the Dutch Baroque love of light and realism.
