What is it?
Trade is when people exchange things they have for things they want. Commerce is the whole system of buying and selling. In the 1600s, the Netherlands was a huge trading center. Dutch ships carried spices, silk, and other goods from all over the world. The Dutch yacht model represents the wealth that came from trade. Rich merchants used these yachts for travel and to show off their success.
Why it matters
