Piet Mondrian
A Dutch painter who created abstract art using only straight lines and primary colors.
What is it?
Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch artist. He started by painting realistic landscapes, but later developed a style called neoplasticism. He believed that art could show the basic structure of the universe by using only straight lines, rectangles, and the colors red, blue, yellow, black, and white. His most famous works are grids of black lines with blocks of color. One of his most famous paintings is Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930).
Why it matters
Mondrian's art changed how people think about painting. He showed that a picture doesn't need to look like anything real to be beautiful and meaningful. His ideas influenced design, architecture, and fashion.
