De Stijl
An art style from the Netherlands that used only straight lines, rectangles, and primary colors.
What is it?
De Stijl (meaning "The Style" in Dutch) was an art movement started in 1917 by Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Artists in this style used only straight horizontal and vertical lines, rectangles, and the colors red, blue, yellow, black, and white. They wanted to create art that was simple, balanced, and universal. Mondrian's Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow is a perfect example of De Stijl.
Why it matters
De Stijl influenced not only painting but also architecture, furniture, and graphic design. It showed that art could be made of very simple elements and still be powerful.
