What is it?
The Roman Empire was one of the largest empires in history. It started in 27 BCE when Augustus became the first emperor. At its peak, it controlled lands from Britain to Egypt. The Romans built roads, aqueducts, and cities. They also made realistic sculptures of their emperors. Many of these sculptures survive today, like the terracotta bust you saw.
Why it matters
The Roman Empire influenced law, language, architecture, and art for centuries. Many modern governments are based on Roman ideas. Understanding the Roman Empire helps you understand a lot of Western history.
