Grand Tour
A trip rich young people from northern Europe took to Italy and other countries to learn about art and culture.
What is it?
The Grand Tour was a tradition in the 1700s and 1800s. Wealthy young men (and sometimes women) from England, France, and other countries traveled to Italy, Greece, and other places. They visited ancient ruins, museums, and cities like Venice. They bought paintings, sculptures, and souvenirs to bring home. Canaletto's vedute of Venice were popular Grand Tour souvenirs. The child's reflection mentions that Canaletto's paintings were collected by British aristocrats as souvenirs of the Grand Tour. Another exhibit shows a painting of Venice's Grand Canal that was likely a Grand Tour souvenir. The painting you captured of the Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Salute would have been a perfect souvenir for a Grand Tourist.
Why it matters
The Grand Tour spread knowledge of classical art and culture. It also created a market for artists like Canaletto. Many museums in Europe and America have collections from Grand Tour travelers.
