Fauvism was an art movement that started around 1905. The name comes from the French word "fauve" meaning "wild beast." Fauvist artists like Henri Matisse and André Derain used intense, unnatural colors and simple shapes. They wanted to express emotions through color. The painting "Bathers with a Turtle" is a Fauvist work.
Why it matters
Fauvism was one of the first modern art movements. It broke away from realistic painting and showed that art could be about feeling. It influenced later styles like Expressionism and Abstract art.
