What is it?
Thebes was a major city in ancient Egypt, located on the Nile River in what is now Luxor. It was the capital of Egypt during the Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom. The city was a center of worship for the god Amun. The Karnak Temple complex, one of the largest religious sites in the world, is located there. Many pharaohs built temples and statues in Thebes to honor the gods and themselves.

Thebes was the political and religious heart of ancient Egypt for centuries. Its temples and tombs contain some of the most famous Egyptian art and architecture.
