What is it?
Roman Egypt was a province of the Roman Empire. It began when the Roman emperor Augustus conquered Egypt after the death of Cleopatra. During this time, Egyptian and Roman cultures mixed. People still mummified their dead, but they added realistic painted portraits on wood, like the child mummy portrait you saw. These portraits are called Fayum mummy portraits. Roman Egypt was a rich and important part of the empire, supplying grain to Rome.
