What is it?
Roman Egyptian art is the art created in Egypt during the Roman period (30 BC – AD 395). It combines traditional Egyptian subjects and symbols (like mummies and gods) with Roman painting techniques and realistic portraiture. The Fayum mummy portraits are the most famous examples. They show people with Roman hairstyles and clothes, but the portraits were used in Egyptian mummification. The portrait of the boy you captured is a perfect example: the painting style is Roman realistic, but it was used as a mummy portrait, which is an Egyptian tradition.
Why it matters
