Romano-Egyptian Style
An art style that mixed Roman realistic portraiture with Egyptian funerary traditions.
What is it?
Romano-Egyptian style developed in Egypt during the Roman period. Artists combined the Egyptian tradition of mummification with Roman-style realistic painting. Mummy portraits are the best example. They show people with realistic features, hairstyles, and clothing from Roman times, but they were used in Egyptian mummy practices. The child portrait you captured is a perfect example of this style. It shows a child with a white tunic and amulet, painted realistically on wood, then placed on a mummy.
