A time from 1250 to 1517 when the Mamluks, a group of soldier-rulers, controlled Egypt and Syria.
What is it?
The Mamluk period began when the Mamluks, originally slave soldiers, took power in Egypt. They built a strong empire that included Egypt, Syria, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The Mamluks were famous for their military strength, especially against the Mongols and Crusaders. They also supported art and architecture, building many mosques, schools, and markets. The Mamluk brass washbasin you captured was made during this period.
Why it matters
The Mamluk period was a golden age for Islamic art and architecture. Many beautiful objects like metalwork, glass, and textiles were created. The Mamluks also protected the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
