Art made by people who follow Islam, often featuring geometric patterns, plant shapes, and calligraphy instead of pictures of people or animals.
What is it?
Islamic art includes many kinds of objects: architecture, metalwork, ceramics, textiles, and more. It was made in many countries from Spain to India. Because many Muslims believe it is wrong to show living beings in religious art, Islamic artists often used repeating geometric patterns, flowing plant designs (arabesques), and beautiful writing (calligraphy). The Mamluk brass washbasin you captured is an example of Islamic art: it has geometric and floral decorations, but no people or animals.
Why it matters
Islamic art is very creative and beautiful. It shows the skill of artists and the importance of math and patterns. It also helps us understand the culture and religion of Muslim people.
