What is it?
The Mamluk Sultanate was a state ruled by Mamluks, who were former slave soldiers. They defeated the Mongols and Crusaders, and became the leading power in the Middle East. They were great patrons of art and architecture, building mosques, schools, and markets. The brass washbasin you saw was made in the Mamluk Sultanate.
