Fabric
A flexible material made of fibers, used for clothing, curtains, and other soft items.
What is it?
Fabric is made by weaving or knitting fibers together. Fibers can come from plants (cotton, linen), animals (wool, silk), or be made by humans (polyester). In art, fabric is sometimes used in sculptures to make them look more real. Degas used real fabric for the tutu and hair ribbon of his 'Little Dancer of Fourteen Years.' This was very unusual at the time. The child's reflection notes that Degas used real fabric to make the sculpture more realistic.
Why it matters
Using real fabric in a sculpture was a bold choice. It made the sculpture look alive and challenged the idea that sculptures should be made only of stone or metal.
