Wetland Habitat
A place where the ground is wet for part or all of the year, like a marsh, swamp, or bog.
What is it?
A wetland is an area where water covers the soil or is near the surface. Wetlands can be freshwater or saltwater. They are home to many plants and animals that are adapted to wet conditions, like cattails, frogs, and birds with long legs. The Spur-winged Plover lives in wetlands, using its long legs to walk through shallow water and mud. The Saddle-billed Stork also lives in wetlands, where it hunts for fish and frogs. The Nile Lechwe lives in swamps and flooded grasslands, using its long hooves to walk on muddy ground. Wetlands are important habitats for many birds, including herons, storks, and plovers.
Why it matters
Wetlands are important because they filter water, provide flood control, and are home to many species. They are also great places for birds to find food and raise their young.
