A cold-blooded animal that lives both in water and on land.
What is it?
Amphibians are animals that can live in water and on land. They include frogs, toads, salamanders, and sirens. Most amphibians start life in water with gills, then grow lungs and legs to live on land. But some, like the Western Lesser Siren, keep their gills and stay in water their whole lives. Amphibians have smooth, moist skin and lay eggs in water.
Why it matters
Amphibians are important because they eat insects and are food for other animals. They are also indicators of a healthy environment because their skin absorbs pollution easily.
