Defensive Adaptation
A body part or behavior that helps an animal protect itself from danger.
What is it?
A defensive adaptation is a trait that helps an animal avoid being eaten or harmed. Examples include sharp spines, camouflage, poison, or hiding. The Spur-winged Plover has spurs on its wings that it uses to fight off predators. Other animals, like porcupines with quills or skunks with smelly spray, also have defensive adaptations. The Sunbittern has a unique defensive adaptation: when threatened, it opens its wings to reveal eye-like patterns that startle predators. The Puff Adder has a defensive adaptation: it inflates its body with air and hisses loudly to scare away threats. This makes it look bigger and more dangerous. The Puff Adder also uses camouflage to hide from predators and prey. The Western Cottonmouth has a distinctive defensive adaptation: when threatened, it opens its mouth wide to show the white lining inside, which is why it is called a cottonmouth. This display warns predators to stay away. It may also vibrate its tail and release a musky smell. The tomato frog has a defensive adaptation: when threatened, it puffs up its body and turns bright red, resembling a tomato. If caught, it secretes a white substance from its skin that deters predators. The Henkel's leaf-tailed gecko uses camouflage as its main defensive adaptation, blending perfectly with tree bark and leaves to avoid detection.
