Tinamou
A group of birds from Central and South America that live on the ground and can fly short distances.
What is it?
Tinamous are birds that look a bit like quail or partridges. They live in forests and grasslands from Mexico to Patagonia. There are about 47 species of tinamous. They are related to ostriches and emus, but unlike those birds, tinamous can fly, though not very far. They are known for their beautiful, glossy eggs that come in many colors, including bright green, blue, and purple. The Elegant Crested Tinamou is one species of tinamou.
Why it matters
Tinamous are an ancient group of birds that help scientists understand how flightless birds like ostriches evolved. Their colorful eggs are also a wonder of nature.
