Courtship Display
A special behavior that animals do to attract a mate.
What is it?
Courtship display is when an animal shows off its colors, sounds, or movements to impress a potential partner. The male peacock fans out its colorful tail feathers and shakes them to attract a female. Other animals, like birds of paradise and some fish, also have elaborate displays. These behaviors help the animals find a mate and continue their species. The male Helmeted Curassow performs a courtship display by offering food to a female. He picks up a fruit or other item and presents it to her, showing that he can provide for her. The Sarus Crane performs a complex courtship dance that includes bowing, jumping, and loud calls. This dance helps pairs bond and choose a mate.
